Our landscape narrative [HERE]SAY project is 6 years old this month. It launched June 2009, with an installation along Water Street, offering 40 place-based stories to walkers. When the project began, fewer than 50% of Canadians used smartphones, so [HERE]SAY was designed for traditional mobile phone users. Streetside signs mark story spots, giving a phone number and a location code. Call the number, punch in the code, and you hear someone's personal story about the spot where you're standing. Today, six years later, over 70% of Canadians use smartphones and creations like Inside Outside Battery can be more appropriate, especially in areas where cellphone reception is unreliable or unavailable. Currently, [HERE]SAY's St. John's signs can be found along Outer Battery Road and Water Street - although some along Water Street have succumbed to vandalism and weather damage. The stories can also be heard online.
