In 2017 police constable Carl Douglas Snelgrove was on trial for alleged sexual assault in St. John's, Newfoundland. He was found not guilty by a jury in the province's supreme court. The verdict was highly controversial and prompted waves of street protests. The judgement was appealed, and on March 22, 2019 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the case must be re-tried. It is a historic contribution to Canadian case law on sexual assault.

Y
ou can experience that controversial trial with our interactive app.  CONSENT places verbatim trial testimonies in a narrative framework to present the events behind the court case, and to examine wider issues of sexual assault. You can also explore the Crown and Defense summations to the jury, hear expert legal commentary, and find links to information about sexual assault and the law in Canada.
